From Typos to North Korea: Your Weekly Briefing

During the week, a lot of news was generated, ranging anywhere from the White House to North Korea.  Find out which Department made not one, but two, grammatical errors in tweets, what disaster occurred in Northern California, which reality star made history, and what Kim Jong-Un is up to now.

US Department of Education: Caught in a W.E.B. of mistakes
Over the weekend, the White House expressed several public statements to begin the celebration of Black History Month.  Unfortunately, the celebrations were halted when the US Department of Education tweeted out a message containing a harsh typo.  The owner of the Twitter was reviled for spelling the name, W.E.B. Du Bois as such.

Not only did they incorrectly spell the name of an African-American activist, but in a following tweet the Department of Education wished their "apologizes," rather than their "apologies."  This is such a large story because this is the second, of many times, that the Department on Education has misspelled sentences.  Critics continued to trash Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Twitter, despite the fact that she did not write the tweet.  Although when first informed of the mistake, it seems as if Secretary DeVos was more concerned because they honored W.E.B. DeBois but forget to honor W.E.B. DeGurls.

Floods in Oroville, California: Dam it
In Oroville, California, water behind a dam has begun to pour over the emergency spillway and flood the nearby city.  The Oroville Dam was built over 50 years ago, and has never overflowed in the reservoir's history.  Dam operators are currently trying to re-route the flood routes to prevent local stores and houses from becoming flooded.  In response, California Governor Jerry Brown has issued a State of Emergency in Oroville, in preparation for the "worst case scenario."  On the other hand, maybe this is just a sign that the California drought is over!

A New Bachelorette: Rose to the top
Following the Monday night episode of the ABC hit television show, The Bachelor, Late Night comedian Jimmy Kimmel announced that Rachel Lindsay will be the next Bachelorette.  This marks a significant moment in the history of the show because this is the first time an African-American will be the host.  While Bachelor Nation is ecstatic that the bubbly and intellectual Rachel will be the next Bachelorette, several internet trolls have commented on the unattractive gap in her teeth.  It is unfortunate that Rachel is already under such scrutiny, although her face does seem kind of familiar...

Kim Jong-Un: Another one bites the dust
According to multiple resources, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was assassinated in Malaysia.  Several Malaysian policemen have confirmed that North Korean female agents assassinated Kim Jong-Nam in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Tuesday.  Apparently, Jong-Nam illegally traveled from North Korea to Malaysia with a fake passport, under the name Kim Chol.  While officials aren't technically allowed to confirm his death, it was released that poisonous needles were found near his dead body.  Well, this isn't the first time people tried to escape North Korea.

  1. I couldn't believe the whole poison assassin thing when I read it earlier this week; it was like something out of a movie. As far as "The Interview" goes, well, life imitates art.

  2. I think its a bit unfair that DeVos is taking the hit for her department's tweet but thats probably just due to her vast unpopularity. Another great post, super funny and awesome use of irony!

  4. I like your "roundup" style of writing this blog - the short, concise summaries are very engaging! I also like how you made some funny puns about W.E.B. DuBois - funny stuff. I feel bad about Rachel Lindsay's tooth gap being made fun of. In some models, like Georgia May Jagger, this gap is admired!
